The terrorist group Boko Haram has been operating in northeast Nigeria since 2014. As a result, the region has experienced massive displacement, with IDPs living in dreadful conditions. The crisis in northeast Nigeria will continue unabated in 2022, with an estimated 8.4 million people urgently needing humanitarian assistance. About 80 percents are women and children. Across East Africa, millions of people are facing famine. A climate-crisis-induced drought, coupled with regional and local conflict, impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, and soaring food prices tied to the war in Ukraine, is creating a dire situation. Over 20 million people across several East African nations, including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, are at risk of starvation. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), “A record 349 million people across 79 countries are facing acute food insecurity – up from 287 million in 2021. More than 900,000 people worldwide are fighting to survive in famine-like conditions.” In 2023, there will likely be insufficient food in the system, which will push global food prices higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine contributes to the rise in hunger, with less wealthy countries particularly vulnerable, including those in the Horn of Africa. The Rohingya are a Muslim minority community that has lived for centuries in Myanmar, where they have long suffered persecution. In August 2017, having become the targets of a military-led campaign of brutal violence, over 700,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state into Bangladesh, joining hundreds of thousands more who had fled Myanmar during a previous exodus. The refugees settled in Cox’s Bazar, where hillsides were quickly cleared of trees and vegetation to accommodate the massive influx of traumatized families and children. These refugees depend on humanitarian aid for shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, and child education. Taking on the gruelling West Highland Way to raise funds for refugees in various global crisis.

At the end of February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine rocking cities across the country with explosions. ASML has established the Ukraine Humanitarian Support Fund, composed of pre-vetted nonprofits committed to providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainians. World Refugee Day, recognized annually on June 20, was established by the United Nations to celebrate and honor refugees around the world. According to the UN, every minute, 20 people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror. More than 80 million people around the world have fled their homes, which is just the beginning of a long and difficult journey, often involving refugee camps, abrupt relocations, family separation, and unnavigable bureaucratic processes. Helping people in need is very important in the world today and I want to use all the attention in connection with my 50th birthday the 31st of August to help the people who are suffering due to the conflict in Ukraine.
