Calling on our Cisco family to help support an amazing opportunity to assist more than one million Americans living with blood cancers. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has nominated our own, Tina Swallow as a candidate in the “Man & Woman of the Year” fundraising campaign. We have a small team working to raise as much money as possible in a 10-week period for LLS. We have from May 7, 2020 - July 18, 2020, to meet our goals! Every dollar raised counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most votes (raises the most money) is named the Man or Woman of the Year. This year, the National Capital Area (NCA) chapter of LLS selected 26 candidates to reach its fundraising goal of $3.5 million. I know these are unprecedented times and COVID-19 is changing the world at a rapid pace. Times are hard, there are fears and a lot of unknowns. In these challenging times, there is one thing we do know – Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer and the COVID-19 crisis does nothing to change that fact. In addition to a grueling battle against cancer, patients are now faced with the threat of a virus that could put them at further risk, as well as the possibility of delays in treatment, as hospitals face maximum capacity. This campaign is very personal to Tina. Her oldest son Beau was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer at age 12 and was given a 5-7% chance of surviving past treatment. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Fighting Blood Cancers since 1949 "Every 3 minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with blood cancer" There are too many of us who have people in our lives who are currently fighting or have fought battles with cancer. My family has had a personal battle with Myeloma - a Blood Cancer. In my wife Sue’s and my life there have been many, many cancer battles by family and friends. In 1982, I found myself trying to understand how this could possibly be happening to my dad. He was diagnosed with Multiple-Myeloma, a bone and blood cancer with no known cure at the time. He was given 6-months to live by his doctors. His diagnosis became "our" diagnosis. His fight became "our" fight. We are all so grateful for the efforts, hard work, and accomplishments that the doctors, researchers and chemists had already achieved in the battle against Bone and Blood cancers (including the team from LLS). Their efforts allowed my father to take treatments (radiology and chemotherapy) that allowed him to extend his life more than 2-years. Yet we want more for the families that are faced with similar circumstances. We want more for all the patient's that are given the frightening news that they too have cancer. This is why my wife and I are dedicated to help raise the funds needed to allow the men and women of science and medicines to put an end to cancer. We firmly believe we will find a cure for these diseases in our lifetime. We look forward to sharing with our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, that we all took part in funding that cure! When I lived in Utah, one of my dear friends, Andy Bailey, was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma Leukemia six days after his son was born. I am thrilled to say that 10+ years later (after numerous treatments), he is cancer free! Since his diagnosis and remission, Andy has dedicated himself to helping others that find themselves in similar positions, specifically after they finish treatment where bills are high and the ability to work is sometimes limited. The Working Patient Program is a program Andy is helping to bring to life for this community. It would create a group of employers that can provide the type of work and flexibility that patients and families going through cancer can perform when able. October 23 is our wedding day. In place of the traditional wedding registry, we ask our guest to donate to a charity of their choosing or to our wedding fund, celebrating the lives of both our dad's who left this earth in 2021 and our passion charity of LLS. Although our dads never met each other in person, we like to think they are both sitting on a golf course somewhere in heaven talking about hockey, beer and watching over us every day. This fund includes: Alzheimer's Association (Wendee's Dad), SPCA of Wake County (Mike's Dad) , and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (Mike and Wendee)

My daughter Emily has signed up to save lives with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and is working to raise as much as possible by April 10th. Over 400 Cisco employees, families and friends from 21 countries, are currently training to join in the adventure of hiking the famous Spanish 'Camino de Santiago' (The Way of Saint James) in June. During the period of the Camino, the combined team will walk more than 60,000 km, or 37,000 miles; equivalent to walking around the earth's equator one and a half times. The main purpose of this initiative is to raise funds for cancer support associations across the globe. We all have been impacted in some way by cancer, and in support of the efforts of "Los Caminantes", we are asking you to join us in the fight against cancer. David was a long-serving member of the Emerging Talent RTP leadership team in addition to his duties in his role as a finance manager. He brought energy, empathy, and steady guidance as part of our Professional Development pillar and helped us navigate and provide support to our community through COVID and so many other challenges. David was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in December of 2021, but continued to be an optimistic and enthusiastic presence even throughout his treatment. On Tuesday, September 13, as music from "The Lord of the Rings" soundtrack played, David passed away. Over 70 years ago, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was founded by a family that lost its son to leukemia—a disease that was considered fatal at the time. Since its founding, LLS has evolved into the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to fighting blood cancers, pioneering many of today’s most innovative cancer treatments and therapies. Despite our tremendous progress, one simple fact remains: nearly 50,000 individuals lose their battle against cancer every year in the U.S. alone, and, unfortunately, some of those individuals are children. I am participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Visionaries of the Year (VOY) program. VOY is a ten-week philanthropic competition for leaders in New Jersey seeking to make an impact in the fight against cancer. I decided to enter the competition because I’ve personally saw people who lost their life to cancer. As health care costs in the country rise, I felt that partnering with LLS and participating in this campaign will allow me to help provide support to families impacted by cancer.

This needs to change, and I know that as we come together and partner with LLS we will find a cure, not someday, but today!
