2021 India COVID-19 Recovery Fund

About

India is experiencing a catastrophic second wave of COVID-19, consistently surpassing its own daily records of infection rates and deaths. While Delhi has been hit the hardest, the virus has rapidly traveled to smaller cities and towns that are struggling. The situation in India is devastating, and it poses a global risk -- experts warn that the more the virus spreads, the more chances it has to mutate and create variants that could eventually resist current vaccines in circulation, threatening to undermine other countries' progress in containing the pandemic. The 2021 India COVID-19 Recovery Fund is composed of pre-vetted nonprofits based in the United States providing emergency response in India. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations' initiatives to provide short-term and long-term response and recovery. Our Fund approach is informed by expert and local recommendations based on up to date information from disaster philanthropy and nongovernmental organization networks, such as the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. Given the ever-changing nature of this pandemic and widespread impact, the composition of the nonprofits in this Fund will evolve. Generally this fund will support healthcare, medical needs, vulnerable populations, and essential services. (Photo: Shivamjoker / Tumisu)

American India Foundation

India recorded the world’s highest daily tally of 314,835 COVID-19 infections on April 22nd. The second wave sent an alarming number of people into a fragile health care system, critically short of hospital beds and oxygen. They are funding frontline health worker interventions, helping those who are at greater risk of getting infected. They are also funding health facility interventions, responding to the acute shortage of health infrastructure.

Sewa International Inc

Sewa is planning to distribute 10,000 "essential kits" -- that include food, basic medicine, masks, sanitizers, etc, across the nation, through a network of organizations, and serve 1,000 orphanages and old-age homes across major cities. They are also planning to ship 200 oxygen concentrators in India.

Care

India has been struck by a deadly second wave of COVID-19. Bihar, one of India’s poorest and highest population areas, is surging with new cases and deaths. More than 2 million people over the past two weeks have been diagnosed. The health system is overwhelmed. CARE is activating a temporary COVID-19 facility in Patna with beds, ventilators and medical staff (approximately $150,000 for two months). They are establishing five temporary health facilities in highly populated districts of Bihar (one of the poorest and underserved areas of India), with enough health professionals, testing labs and supplies to concentrate on the most critical cases. The physical infrastructure is in place through the government. CARE will provide high-throughput 200 bed facilities with oxygen support to each of the five facilities along with 24/7 treatment of all patients by qualified doctors and nurses whose deployment CARE will fund. Donations to CARE will help provide essential hospital services, more health workers, additional beds, oxygen supply, and much more.

Direct Relief

Direct Relief is working with several local Indian nonprofits, global logistics companies and large-scale manufacturers to source and transport oxygen concentrators and other critical items into India. Direct Relief has committed an initial $5 million in emergency funding in response to urgent requests to provide oxygen concentrators and other supplies to India as the country experiences the world’s highest Covid-19 case count and critical shortages of medical-grade oxygen and other resources.

Center For Disaster Philanthropy

The COVID-19 coronavirus was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11. People across the United States and around the world are now contemplating what the long-term impacts will be on their personal lives, their communities and their livelihoods.

In March, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) launched the CDP COVID-19 Response Fund to support containment, response and recovery activities for those most affected and for the responders.

Americares

To address the devastating second wave of COVID-19 in India, Americares is focused on strengthening COVID-19 health facilities through the provision of critical equipment and supplies, protecting frontline health workers with PPE and disinfectants, and preparing communities through the provision of masks as well as through COVID-19 awareness and vaccine education. Partnering with corporations and foundations, Americares has supported ten states and local governments. Additionally, Americares is mobilizing support to address the two major aftereffects of COVID-19 namely, mental health and poor nutrition. They are working to bridge the nutrition deficit due to the lock down situation among pregnant women, lactating mothers and children below five years. Americares is also working towards development and dissemination of digitized educational content to address mental health issues in partnership with India’s leading mental health specialists.

Path

India is in crisis. Right now, the country is facing the worst waves of COVID-19 seen so far during the pandemic. The reported death rate has surpassed 2,000 a day—but even these numbers may be drastically undercounted. Since 1978, PATH has supported public health in India. PATH’s team in India is working side by side with state governments on the COVID-19 response—from procuring oxygen concentrators to supporting greater infrastructure for coronavirus testing. Additionally, an oxygen tracker as well as an oxygen delivery toolkit are part of the services provided thus far. You can support the response today by making a gift—or simply by sharing this content to raise awareness of the urgent need for medical oxygen access.
